Carolina Delgado

PhD Student in Design funded by FCT PhD Studentship 2021.04708.BD with the ‘Nature-Based Design: Reusable Packaging for Dry Food Bulk Consumption’ project.

Research collaborator at CIAUD—Research Centre for Architecture, Urbanism and Design, Lisbon School of Architecture, Universidade de Lisboa, and IFIMUP—Institute of Physics for Advanced Materials, Nanotechnology and Photonics, operating at Faculty of Sciences, University of Porto.

At TextileLab Amsterdam, Waag—Technology and Society (NL), she finished Fabricademy post-graduation—Textile & Technology Academy, an intersection of Textiles, Digital Fabrication and Biology (2019-2021). Carolina returns to TextileLab Amsterdam to develop practical research experimenting with seaweed bio-based materials for PhD research.

With an MA in Production Design from IADE—Universidade Europeia (2018), she defended her master’s dissertation, ‘Sustainable Design Habits in Affordable Housing from the 50’s,’ with 18 values. With a degree in Visual Design (1999), Escola Superior de Design, IADE, worked as a Communication Designer and Creative Supervisor in Advertising, Design and Marketing in Creative Agencies and Pharmaceutical Industry. During these years, she took many complementary courses, such as: • Nature-Based Design at Faculty of Sciences, University of Lisbon (2018); • Sustainable Studies at the Institute of Social Sciences, University of Lisbon (2017).

Collaborator and co-authoring, published and presented in international peer-reviewed conferences and scientific journals.

As an invited teacher, she gave seminars on Circular Economy, Sustainable Design, and Bio-based Materials in Design courses at Universidade Lusófona, IADE—Universidade Europeia, and Re-Fresh Global, Tel Aviv (IL). Recently, she co-lectured Laboratory Practices with Bio-Materials—a discipline organized for Architecture PhD students from the Lisbon School of Architecture (FAUL)—lecturing a workshop on documenting protocols and experiments with bio-materials and assisting the students in the laboratory.

Currently, Carolina is developing her research in BioLab Lisboa, where she volunteers to instruct and support the biomaterials experiments of undergraduate students from high schools and colleges, such as Faculdade de Belas Artes (FBAL) and Escola Artística António Arroio. Additionally, she assists graduates in Fabricademy assignments and workshops on Biofabricating Materials for Casa Pia de Lisboa teachers.

Together with Designers from the Atlantic Futures Project and the Bauhaus of the Seas Sails, collaborates in the Seaweed Talks group in BioLab Lisboa, promoting the sustainable use of Atlantic resources.

Carolina is an associate member of ZERO – Associação Sistema Terrestre Sustentável and The Fablab Network.
